Colour blocking has been around in the art world for years but it’s fairly new to interior design. It’s a great way of bringing a room to life and injecting lots of energy into it. By introducing areas of contrasting or complementary colours you can create all sorts of effects, we’ll show you what we mean…

These bright white kitchen units create an eye-catching feature; they draw your attention to them because of the contrast against the green splashback. The chairs in different tones of white and grey add even more interest, especially against the splash of pale turquoise on the side wall.

You could try painting your alcoves in bright colours too, it makes them look so much more exciting!

If you prefer your walls to work in harmony, using complementary pastel colours is a refreshing way of adding interest to a large open-plan room. The gentle colour blocking makes this room look even more spacious, big enough for the whole family to hang out and watch Saturday night TV together.

If we all had kitchens like this we’d probably be better cooks! The neutral walls contrast with the assorted pink, reds and oranges to really bring this kitchen to life, it feels full of energy – it’s fun and playful but still sophisticated and grown-up.

One of our favourite tricks is using a bold contrasting shade and striking design to create the illusion of a larger window, and this one is finished off with contrasting colours on the remaining walls and ceiling.

Here’s another gorgeous kitchen, the fresh blue blocks of colour generate fluidity as your eye traces it from ground to ceiling, making the room appear taller! It also creates a striking contrast against the neutral backdrop.

And lastly, colour blocking isn’t just about straight lines, you can use any shape you can think of. These block circles in different tones have turned this bedroom into a really funky space!
